Hearing from God

Recently, Kate and I felt God move us on to a new Church. We now worship at Powerhouse Christ Church in Doncaster. We’ve been their for a little bit now, and I got my first opportunity to preach to them on the 29/09/2019.

God gave me a word about hearing from him and how the Bible models that to us for today.

So, here is the recording of that preach, live from Powerhouse Doncaster!

Episode 1, Introduction.

I am pleased to introduce to you my new project. It has been bubbling under the surface for some time now and I have finally gotten around to doing it! I am going to be recording podcasts about the Christian faith and more besides.

In this episode, I introduce my thinking behind the podcast and introduce myself and what I like to do.
You can listen here, or you can download it and listen to it at wherever you like.

Adjust, Equip, Furnish

In 1 Thessalonians 3 Paul writes to the people of Thessalonica and shares with them Timothy’s report on their progress. Within it he writes:

“Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you again and supply what is lacking in your faith.” (1 Thes 3:10 NIV).

When I read this scripture my heart skipped, I read it over and over again, what could it mean? Why am I fixated on this one Scripture? I decided to read it in other version and found they say:

“Supply what is lacking in your faith” (NIV)

“Perfect that which is lacking in your faith?” (KJV)

“Fill the gaps in your faith” (NLT)

These are all statements of the job of the Church. The early Church had Paul and Timothy coming to them so that they might teach them more. We have each other, we have church leadership.

I am blessed to serve alongside my wife as youth pastors for Revive Church Goole campus, we do this under the banner of Revival Nation. When I was reading this scripture I felt a nudge, a confirmation of what it is we are doing. We serve the young people of Goole whether they are members of Revive Church or members of the community, we serve them by “Praying earnestly” for them so that we might have the opportunity to spend time with them, be it on a Friday night or Sunday morning, that we may “Fill the gaps in their faith.”

I looked into this scripture further, the term “perfect” or “strengthen” was translated from the Greek “καταρτίζω” (katartizō) which can be used to mean adjust, equip or furnish. I think this is a great way of looking at the mission of the ministry and has become a personal tagline for our ministry. I will look at each one of these elements over the coming blogs.

καταρτίζω is a derivative of the work “ἄρτιος” (artios) which can be translated as fitted (or furnished), Complete or Perfect. It is used in Hebrews 13 where we are reminded that “16All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (Hebrews 13:16-17 NIV). This shows that our job as youth pastors is to equip young people for the good works God has planned for them.
